Double eyelid is a slightly confusing way of signifying the presence of a noticeable crease in the upper eyelid.
Because a crease visually divides the upper eyelid into a top half and a bottom half, the lid is said to be "double."
The term is used most frequently in describing an operation known as double eyelid surgery designed to create a crease in those born without a natural crease (single eyelid) or with a weak, low, or misformed crease.
While most commonly employed in patients of Asian lineage, double eyelid surgery techniques can be applied in non-Asian, or Occidental, patients as well.
