Epicanthoplasty

Epicanthoplasty is the name for a cosmetic eyelid surgery designed to reduce or eliminate the epicanthal folds. It is most commonly performed on those of Asian lineage.

There are over fifty methods currently in use during Asian double eyelid surgery to attempt to blunt the folds. All have drawbacks ranging from delayed healing to noticeable scarring to limited effect.

While commonly applied in the Orient, epicanthoplasty is not very popular in the West. An Asian eyelid without an epicanthal fold can look unnatural or surgical.

When epicanthal folds are unusually large, they may narrow the horizontal dimension of the eyelids' opening. In such cases, the risk-reward ratio of epicanthoplasty eyelid surgery may be more favorable.
