Lateral flare describes the shape of the Asian upper eyelid crease along only its outermost end. It may occur as a natural component of either a tapered or parallel eyelid crease or be created during Asian double eyelid surgery.
With a lateral flare, the tail portion of the crease rises slightly upward rather than running parallel to the eyelid's edge.
While a severely tapered crease may give a false impression of a lateral flare, most Asian lids, contrary to common belief, do not possess this feature naturally.
A flared upper eyelid crease is highly unusual in non-Asian patients.
