Tear Trough

Tear trough indicates a depression located between the upper cheek and the side of the nose. The indentation may extend in a curve beneath the lower eyelid as an "extended tear trough" or "infraorbital hollow."

While a tear trough is technically a cheek depression and not an eyelid problem, many patients seem concerned by this anatomic void.

A number of cosmetic operations have been used to address the tear trough, from midface lift to eyelid fat repositioning to fat injections to silicone cheek implants. All have shortcomings and have grown much less popular following the introduction of longer lasting and safe injectable dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm.
